Gibbs & Soell Sustainability Report Sheds Light On Challenges

"Companies aren't eager to lay out their own hard-earned dollars if they're not sure of a payback, and this is reflected in staffing (or lack thereof) devoted to initiatives in sustainability. More than two-thirds of the executives said their company has people who are responsible for sustainability, but "most have merely added green efforts to the primary duties of a team, or C-suite or senior-level position." Just 25 percent of the executives said their own company has a high-level person or a team "specifically/solely dedicated to sustainability and/or 'going green.'" Even in companies with 10,000-plus employees, the figure is a lackluster 31 percent."

NYTimes.com Prepping Facebook Integration

New York Times Co. (NYSE: NYT) execs have insisted for months that social media and metered media can coexist, promising more social and more personalization as the prep for switching on the meter for news stories continues. (They’ve also promised to make sure the meter doesn’t get in the way of sharing once that switch is flipped.) Tonight, NYTimes.com takes a big step in that direction, adding “Login with Facebook” as an option and remaking its home and article pages to make room for a Facebook news module.

Mobile Tech in Afghanistan

"For some challenges though, there are unique local solutions. Since many users have mobile phones but no access to electricity, battery charging stalls (shown in the photo below) have popped up in cities like Mazar-e-Sharif. One hour’s battery charging costs 10 Afghanis or 0.2 cents. A stall carries a variety of chargers to suit different phones. To charge the phone, a user is given a number tag and the same number is attached to the battery and the phone. It’s a system similar to how valets keep track of the keys of a parked car."

Mathematicians Keep Tabs on Traffic [WSJ]

Increasing traffic congestion in the U.S. has a number of detrimental effects, said Naveen Lamba, global lead for intelligent transportation for IBM, which surveyed drivers world-wide about congestion earlier this year. “It’s a pretty serious problem,” Lamba said. “It’s starting to affect people’s health, and the economic competitiveness of regions. Companies are choosing to locate or not to locate in certain areas. Something has to be done

This Exemplifies What Local News Sites Are Up Against

"A Denver Post story about accusations of racial profiling by police was featured prominently yesterday on the HuffPost’s Denver page. A click on the story led to a one-paragraph summary of the article and a link to the original piece (see screen grab below). For many readers, the HuffPost summary would be sufficient, thus depriving the Post of the traffic it otherwise might have earned." [Reflections of a Newsosaur]
