Houston on rise, but not unbeatable {good sports writing}

""We recognize each other and we see each other's tape all of the time. We have to prepare this week like we have all year and go on the road and win."

If Houston had done that when it went to El Paso last month, we'd be talking about the Cougars in the hunt for a BCS bowl game.

It could be argued that none of the non-BCS teams currently in the top 10 have done as much as Houston.

The Cougars beat three teams from BCS leagues, including two on the road. The victims include Oklahoma State, ranked fifth in the nation at the time, and Texas Tech, considered by many to be the fourth-best team in the Big 12 Conference.

In addition, the Coogs won at Mississippi State, a place that has been a struggle for SEC powers.

That's three victories over decent to good teams from power conferences.

Boise State, clinging to that one season-opening victory over Oregon, has not faced similar tests. Neither has TCU, which is trying to tout victories at Clemson and at BYU for reasons to be included in the BCS bowls."
