San Francisco Shares List of Green Vendors [NYT]

the city has put online the database it has developed over the past five years to serve as a resource for other cities as well as corporate purchasing agents and consumers. Called the SF Approved List, the Web site lists more than 1,000 products, from bathroom disinfectants to computer keyboard cleaners, that do not emit greenhouse gases.

As the head of product innovation at a global company pointed out to me, ecological transparency would change the business landscape in two ways. First would be a shift in the “value basis” of a product, adding its ecological impacts into the equation. In addition to huge purchasing power across all retail sectors now investing in greener goods, the report finds that sustainability efforts are becoming a required program rather than a competitive advantage.
