EPA Names Houston Largest Municipal Purchaser of Renewable Energy in U.S.

The City of Houston has been designated the number one municipal purchaser of green power and the fourth largest overall purchaser in the nation, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Houston plans to fight hurricanes with solar power

The funding will go to purchase 25 mobile solar-powered generators for city use in case of emergency. The generators can be used to refrigerate medicine, recharge batteries or power emergency communications systems. When we're not in crisis, they'll provide supplemental energy to fire stations around the city.

Houston, We Have Electric Cars | The Big Money

Far better situated are cities like Houston. The grid there is stable, and besides, lots of Texans have garages, making it possible for commuters to put aside their devotion to Ford F-150s and enjoy cheap overnight charges without plunging the city into the dark. The Economist recently argued that Texas is the new California, for reasons along along these lines

Houston aims to be electric car capital | Green Tech - CNET News

"Even if a small percentage of Texas drivers switch to electric cars, the payoff could be substantial. The Houston area alone is home to 4.5 million vehicles that travel 86 million miles a day, according to state statistics.

And Texas leads the nation in producing clean, carbon-free electricity from windmills. But the state must build billions of dollars worth of transmission lines needed to channel the wind power to urban centers."

Solar Power Could Be Coming To Houston In A Big Way [Green Inc. Blog]

"Under a proposal due to be announced in the next several hours, the city would purchase power for its buildings from a new NRG solar energy plant to be completed in July. Its 10-megawatt capacity would be the largest in Texas, and would provide as much as 1.5 percent of the city government’s power needs."

Cool story on "The House Collectors" [NYT]

"One of her recent purchases, for $3,000, was the Knolle-Ripple House, an early 19th century building she bought from the owner of the pasture where it has sat abandoned, slowly rotting and being reclaimed by vines and scrub brush. She plans to move it to Lonesome Pine Ranch — one of three ranches she owns with her husband near this town an hour and a half from Houston."
