IBM's Water Conservation Efforts In Northern California
IBM's new predictive analytics software scours the web for feedback on the product or service of your choice, and is able to interpret slang and emoticons from blogs, comment boards, and other far-flung corners of the Internet to give businesses a more accurate view of what their customers are saying.
IBM isn't giving suppliers a deadline for compliance, but the company hopes that changes will be complete by 2011. And if suppliers don't get on board, IBM will eventually take its business elsewhere. They won't be able to hide from sustainability audits for long--now that both Wal-Mart and IBM are on board, it's only a matter of time before other big companies start demanding the same things.

Wind is the fastest growing source of energy in the United States, with a 39% increase in installed capacity this past year. The U.S. has the largest installed capacity in the world, followed by Germany and China. But this may not be for long as countries around the world make green energy an environmental and economic priority.
BigSheets is built on top of another piece of software called Hadoop. This is an open-source platform for processing very large amounts of Web data by splitting up tasks and handing them off to a cluster of different computers. Hadoop is often used to analyze large amounts of unstructured Web data.
"Hoping to use the technology as a competitive advantage, some big chains are reluctant to discuss their plans. The Sam’s Club division of Wal-Mart, Crate & Barrel, Kerr Drug of North Carolina and Disney stores are among the retailers that confirmed they were testing various mobile technology or planned to do so soon." Here's how IBM's Ed Brill describes the Project Vulcan concept:
"IBM Project Vulcan is not a brand-new effort. It builds on the existing capabilities, and represents the future versions of, the IBM Lotus product portfolio - including Notes. One of its key themes is social analytics and business analytics combined and applied to industry-specific scenarios - making collaboration more focused and relevant. The vision of Project Vulcan intends to deliver collaboration across company boundaries; make it easy to deploy the technology; and include developer-friendly services and APIs."
