Nice to see this in North Carolina

"More plastic bottles have been dropped off at the county's three centers since the landfill bottle ban was imposed, according to the City-County Utilities Division. From a monthly average of around 14,000 pounds of plastic for the period from September 2008 to September 2009, collections have risen to an average of about 19,000 a month for the first three months since the ban went into effect." Trash Talk: Campaign targets takeout trash - Yourhome.ca

TOWO has its own three Rs: Refuse (Do you really need all of those straws, plastic cutlery and napkins?); Retake (Bring your own containers, cups and bags.); and Reconsider (Take a look at your eating habits, and maybe, like Lee, make some changes.) The campaign also has a handout card with 10 waste reduction strategies for restaurants.

Unfortunately, the site seems to be down.

Good effort from CVS pharmacy to spark use of reusable bags

As much as I've ripped them for their football field-sized receipts, this shows some life within their sustainability efforts. But $1 for every fourth visit? Sigh.

Geez // "Golf Balls Take 1000 Years to Decompose" [Green Living Ideas]

"Not only do golf balls take between a century and millennium to break down, they release toxic zinc in the process. This heavy metal attaches “itself to the ground sediment and poisoned the surrounding flora and fauna” when in water. Other heavy metals used in golf ball production include tungsten, cobalt and lead."

Excellent! -- "Kentucky Now Collects Styrofoam for Recycling"

Treehugger has details.
---------------------------------------------------
"Foam containers with a #6 on them, including foam cups, plates, take-out containers, egg cartons and even some of the stuffing that you find around electronics can all be recycled. To make it easier on the recyclers, please remove and rinse cups and containers, throw away straws and lids, and don't put packing peanuts in the recycling bins (try shipping stores to see if they will take them back)."
