This Exemplifies What Local News Sites Are Up Against

"A Denver Post story about accusations of racial profiling by police was featured prominently yesterday on the HuffPost’s Denver page. A click on the story led to a one-paragraph summary of the article and a link to the original piece (see screen grab below). For many readers, the HuffPost summary would be sufficient, thus depriving the Post of the traffic it otherwise might have earned." [Reflections of a Newsosaur]

Yahoo Preps Local Site For SF

In a breathless email blast to registered contributors at Associated Content, Yahoo said it is “looking for writers living in or near the San Francisco area (like you!) to write compelling, local content — ranging from highlights of your favorite neighborhood destinations to metro-wide, first-person reporting assignments covering the stories and topics not typically found in mainstream news media.”

A questionnaire soliciting personal interests and writing samples from potential contributors indicates that the site will cover crime, local news, politics, weather, traffic, transit, sports, business, local celebrities, personal-interest stories, events and things to do, nightlife, restaurants, social calendar, real estate and development, education.

Those responding to the questionnaire were promised “a $10 assignment to write on any topic about San Francisco!” In the future, Yahoo said “select contributors” will receive “weekly, paid assignments to write articles on SF and their own neighborhoods.”

Media Nation Publishes Email From An Editor At AOL's Patch

Basically, the job is 24/7 with so far little support in getting any kind of time off — nights, weekends, vacation days guaranteed under our AOL contract. (Some regional editors do try to help; others don’t.) This time-off issue has become a major concern among local editors. You might hear about the 70-hour work weeks. Yes, 70 hours and more. It’s a start-up and all that, and I knew it would be hard work going in. But what is becoming distressing is this sense that I can’t get a break. I’ve worked in journalism for more than 20 years as a newspaper reporter, online editor, magazine editor, and I’ve never worked so much in my life.

CityGrid Media on the market opp for local

As the local market "explodes" as Google, Microsoft and Bing move deeper into the space, Herratti will continue to build a network of sites and services to support local businesses. The people supporting the business have been in place for at least a year. Herratti laid out the strategy in 2008.

"The local industry is growing at about 15% annually," he says. "I want to beat that. And if things go well, I expect that to happen."

NYTimes on Galveston's continuing post-IKE recovery

We were in Galveston recently and it actually looks a lot better than I would've thought. We stayed in a little seaside motel and had a great dinner at a famous local restaurant called Gaido's. Just trying to support the local economy.

"About 20 percent of the 58,000 people who lived in the city before the hurricane have not returned, and one-quarter of the families whose homes were damaged by floods — about 4,000 households — are still unable to live in them."
