The Green Inc. Blog reports program to make solar affordable is progressing

Kirk J. Condyles for The New York Times

"The model sets out to eliminate high up-front costs — a key reason why people resist making such improvements. It does so by allowing homeowners to pay for the renovations gradually, through higher property taxes, which can also be passed on to subsequent owners if the house is sold."

makes no sense // "South Dakota Legislature Kneecapping State’s Wind Potential"

"Senate Bill 123 would remove all incentives for large capital improvement projects.
Senate Bill 195 would eliminate any refunds on projects that cost more than $40 million.
House Bill 1060 heard yesterday would cut tax refunds for large commercial projects. Like all new power stations, wind projects are “large capital improvement projects”, “cost more than $40 million” and are “large commercial projects”. The shortsighted laws curtail wind power."

Winds of change blow in for renewables [guardian]

"He said: "No country makes offshore wind turbines of the size we are talking about today on a commercial scale. Twenty years ago the UK was a leading centre for onshore wind technology, but we failed to capitalise on that by not providing the right climate for growth.

"We are determined not to let that happen again. We are creating the largest market in the world for offshore wind and we intend to build and support the industry."

Houston, We Have Electric Cars | The Big Money

Far better situated are cities like Houston. The grid there is stable, and besides, lots of Texans have garages, making it possible for commuters to put aside their devotion to Ford F-150s and enjoy cheap overnight charges without plunging the city into the dark. The Economist recently argued that Texas is the new California, for reasons along along these lines

Houston aims to be electric car capital | Green Tech - CNET News

"Even if a small percentage of Texas drivers switch to electric cars, the payoff could be substantial. The Houston area alone is home to 4.5 million vehicles that travel 86 million miles a day, according to state statistics.

And Texas leads the nation in producing clean, carbon-free electricity from windmills. But the state must build billions of dollars worth of transmission lines needed to channel the wind power to urban centers."
